The first Hydrogen Storage above 3000m
Müllerhütte is an alpine shelter 3.000 m above sea level that has never been connected to a grid and is only reachable by foot or helicopter. To power the shelter in the past, our client Mader had to rely on a diesel generator, with all the diesel transported by helicopter. Diesel generators have a high noise and air pollution output and considering the location can also run up high maintenance and operation costs.


The Technical Challenge
Müllerhütte wants to generate their own CO2-free energy, store it and use it during the summer days, when they are open, to reach 100% of energy independence and replace the diesel generator that was their
only source of power.
GKN planned a modular construction of a MEDI hydrogen storage system. This system allows the Müllerhütte to store the produced electricity by the PV on a safe and compact basis.

A hydrogen storage system at an altitude of above 3.000m really makes this a unique project. The biggest
challenges of this project have been the robustness (altitude, temperatures and transportation), the
modularity, the light weight and the remote control of the energy management system up on the glacier.
Scalable: With the successful installation and operation of a GKN hydrogen storage system on an alpine shelter at such a height, this will be the forerunner for many similar projects in isolated areas that need a more sustainable solution.
